Legenda "Solidarności" Anna Walentynowicz została uznana przez amerykański tygodnik "Time" za jedną ze 100 kobiet, które zdefiniowały ostatnie stulecie. Walentynowicz, która zginęła w katastrofie smoleńskiej, została uznana najważniejszą kobietę 1980 roku.

Annę Walentynowicz - Kobietę Roku 1980 roku- "Time" opisuje jako matkę polskiej niepodległości. Przypomina jej życiorys oraz to, że jej zwolnienie ze Stoczni Gdańskiej (wówczas stoczni im. Lenina) stało się powodem strajków. Walentynowicz wyrzucono z pracy z powodu m.in. jej działalności na rzecz robotników.
Strajk, który podjęli stoczniowcy i pracownicy innych zakładów, doprowadził do podpisania porozumienia gdańskiego i powstania pierwszego wolnego związku zawodowego w komunistycznej Europie Wschodniej - "Solidarności".
"Triumf w Gdańsku przyspieszył upadek komunizmu dekadę później. Doprowadził też do tego, że całe pokolenia Polaków widzą w Walentynowicz matkę swojej niepodległości" - napisał "Time".
Wśród 100 kobiet magazynu "Time" znalazły się również m.in.: sufrażystki, Coco Chanel, Billie Holiday, Eleonora Roosvelt, Marilyn Monroe, Jacqueline Kennedy, czy Indira Ghandi.
